Two William Boyd's!
The sound era was a mixed blessing for William Boyd. He successfully made the transition to talkies, retaining his stardom. Unfortunately, he had to wrestle with others who bore the name of "William Boyd". In 1931, a stage actor named William Boyd, who was now working in films, was involved in a serious scandal that reeked of alcohol and gambling. To make matters worse, the initial photo printed in the paper was one of William L. Boyd! The erroneous identification dogged "our Boyd" and he attempted to put a stop to the besmirching of his name by calling himself simply "Bill" Boyd. Loyal fans of "Bill's" commonly refer to the "bad" Boyd! as William "Stage" Boyd. The mix-up finally abated when the stage/screen actor died.

William "Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd
William Boyd was once a famous silent movie star, playing many parts and was a major attraction in "Talkies. But, when Boyd read the script of Hopalong Cassidy, he knew he wanted this part and knew how he wanted to play him. After awhile, he convinced everyone else how Hoppy should be played and the rest is history. After Boyd played Hopalong Cassidy in the first "Hoppy" movie, William Boyd was concerned with only one character, a fictitious, black hatted, cowboy that absorbed nearly the entire personality of William Boyd, and the two became the same, William Boyd was Hopalong Cassidy and Hopalong Cassidy was William Boyd. Although offered many other parts in other movies, Boyd refused them all. He never wanted to play another part in any other movie, he only wanted to play "Hoppy", and when he was making a Hoppy movie, he couldn't of been happier.
